Artist of the Month: Melissa Lackey
MMFC May/June Artist Feature: Melissa Lackey
As a graduating senior in the studio art program at UW-Stout, my practice has been primarily housed within sculpture. This being said, I’ve consistently used drawing and image making as a vehicle to create three dimensional spaces.
Now that I’ve finished nearly all of my obligations for the semester I wanted to compose a body of work that focused on drawing and image making as a final artifact, rather than using it as a stop on the way.
In my art practice I’m interested in interacting with memories. I explore this by introducing fragmented imagery that goes against narrative. Representation within the imagery becomes iconographic and symbolic, rather than descriptive- this prompts the viewer to contextualize the drawings within their own experiences. The drawings are created with specific memories/mindsets/ideas in mind, but without the narrative element, they are open to the viewer’s interpretation.
