History

Our co-op had a humble beginning in the summer of 1973, with about ten people in Menomonie who wanted to buy affordable, wholesome food, support local agriculture, and promote the ‘buy local’ movement.  The orders started as monthly deliveries to one member’s garage. Not long after people started ordering extras so they could get their needs met in between deliveries.

The success of the ‘buying club’ evolved into a storefront which was a silver-colored building shared with Robert Geide Designs in downtown Menomonie.

In 2001, the co-op moved to the current building in downtown Menomonie. This was the first time that the building size and product offerings were significantly increased. Menomonie Market’s growth has been tremendous ever since! The co-op currently has 22 full and part-time employees, over 1,300 active members and does nearly $2 million in annual sales.

The board and staff of the Menomonie Market Food Co-op are committed to the community and strive to provide high quality natural and organic products at fair prices, while supporting local producers and the local economy. The co-op also offers community education and supports numerous organizations with cash and product donations.

For over 35 years Menomonie Market has bounced back from adversity and is a proven example of community leadership, staying power, and innovation. The co-op was honored to receive the Greater Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce “Business of the Year 2008” award, which is truly a reflection of the co-op’s vibrant presence in the community.
